Working as the communications coordinator for the Utah Department of Health I am constantly in and out of meetings. I get asked all the time, “What do you wear to an important business meeting?” Usually, I’m being asked by a good friend so I reply with, “Clothes.” Most of that time I get a laugh. These conversations prompted this blog post and below I give you my two cents on what to wear to a business meeting.
1. No fidgeting.
It is the worst when you are in a meeting and you’re fidgeting the entire time. Not only does it distract you, it also distracts the others in the meeting. Fidgeting also makes you look unprepared, nervous, and unreliable. So first thing first, wear something that you will not fidget with. You should be focused on the meeting, not your wardrobe.
2. Your signature color.
You want to be confident in your appearance because that will trickle down to the confidence in your ability. Wear a top that is in your favorite color or a color that you feel the best in. Also just to throw in a little color theory here, which is how people respond to different colors, if you’re going to powerful wear red, calm and relaxed wear blue, energetic wear yellow.
3. More than just clothes.
I’m talking jewelry here. Wearing something shiny brightens up your face. When you are speaking people with naturally be drawn in and will listen better. Don’t go extreme and wear bedazzled jewelry everywhere, but I simple shiny necklace or bracelet will help draw the attention to you when you are speaking.
4. Perfectly polished.
Think about your nail polish. I am more confident when I have my nails painted. When I know I have a big, important meeting in a few days I always think about what color my nails are. I don’t want anything too bright and youthful, I usually go with a darker, deeper shade.
